1959 Chevrolet Corvette Uncovered

Barry sends in this 1959 Corvette that's been uncovered after a few decades. He said it was found in a guy's shop after sitting for 28 years. It comes with a fresh 283 matching motor, a 4 speed out of a 1961 Vette and both tops. It would be great to see a classic Corvette like this back on the road.

Edit Monday, February 27, 2012 - This Corvette has now been sold. Good luck to the new owner. Hope to see some progress photos of the restoration.

1967 Chevrolet Corvette Big Block

This is one of those I-Spy games. Can you find the muscle car hidden in these pictures? I'm told this twisted mass of rusted metal is a '67 Corvette. A 427 cid big block no less. But unless you've got a sharp eye for Corvettes you wouldn't know it.

The story behind the particular Corvette started 30 years ago when it was rolled in a dramatic crash. It's just been sitting ever since, probably because even with sky high big block Corvette prices there's not enough left to justify a restoration. Probably the only thing that would be worth salvaging would be the title, which apparently the owner can't find after all these years. So this may be one of those Corvettes that eventually rusts away to nothing. Pretty sad.

This '56 Corvette shell and chassis has been sitting in storage for over 35 years. It was stripped in 1974 for a restoration, but as we all know sometimes real life gets in the way of our hobbies. The original 265 engine is long gone as is the rest of the drive train. No word on whether this was originally a 3 speed manual or a Powerglide automatic.

The body looks ugly, but seems pretty straight under those multiple layers of paint and primer. There were 3467 Corvettes produced in 1956, which is a big part of the reason for their value. Compare the early Corvette production numbers to something like the Mustang, which had over 500,000 produced it's first year.

1955 Corvette

Sometimes those stories about a dream car tucked away in some old guy's barn aren't too far off. Here's a candidate for a really nice project. It's a 1955 Corvette that looks to be Pennant Blue. This was a super rare color with only 45 produced because it was replaced early in 1955 with Harvest Gold.

Actually all of the 1955 Corvettes are very rare, with only 700 produced. This was compared to 3,640 made the year before. The release of Ford's brand new Thunderbird was part of that sales decline and rumor was that the Corvette project would be short lived at GM.

Not much more info available on this car, but it sure would be fun to wrench on.

1959 Chevrolet Corvette Hard Top

This '59 Vette is up to it's axles in weeds and snow. According to the owner it's been sitting in this field in the California high country for more than 20 years! Man, this baby is just screaming to be restored!

Under the hood is a 327 cid backed by a 4 speed. Owner claims mileage is just over 17,000! Obviously no rust on the fiberglass, but pretty bad oxidation on the original paint. Check out the Rocket wheels!

1962 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible - "Slight Smoke Damage"

OUCH! These photos just make you cringe. The great thing about the Corvette fiberglass bodies is they don't rust. But catching on file and burning to the ground? Yeah, you still gotta watch out for that.

Before it's little BBQ, this was a rare black on black Corvette. It had a (non-original) 327 cid with 250 hp. Unfortunately this one probably isn't even good for parts any more. That fire really took a toll. Too bad we don't have the full story on what happened.

1966 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

Here's a cool little project that's been sitting in a North Carolina field. It's a 1966 Corvette convertible that someone started to do a resto-mod on. It's got a T10 four speed and Chevy 10 bolt rear end, but no motor. Interior is totally trashed (missing actually) and not sure what's going on with that left front tire. Maybe it's just the tire missing, but I don't see any spindle there either. As if there wasn't enough work to do on this car!

1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window

Yet another fire damaged Corvette. Those fiberglass bodies sure disintegrate in a hurry when they catch on fire. The source on both cars was the same, so you wonder if they were both torched in the same fire? Pretty expensive fire. The famous Split Window on this Corvette is unfortunately melted away completely.

This was a factory Riverside Red car with red interior. It rolled out of the factory with a 327 cid (300 hp) motor and 4 speed manual transmission. The engine is no longer original and neither is the transmission unfortunately. Exhaust manifolds are correct, for all the good that does this scorched piece of melted fiberglass.

1954 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

Here's a project to get you drooling; a nice little '54 Vette chassis that looks to be mostly unmolested. The floor was hacked up a bit where someone tried to install a 4 speed, but nothing that can't be fixed. Now, locating a correct motor & transmission might be harder.

The frame is rusted, but looks complete. Of course rust isn't a concern on the fiberglass tubs of Corvettes, but cracking is. It's not totally clear from the photos, but there doesn't seem to be any serious fiberglass damage on this body. What is a concern is the missing front clip.

This is a sorry state to see such a rare big block Corvette. It's an original 427, 4 speed car with posi rear end. Color was Cordovan Maroon with black interior and convertible top.
