1970 Dodge Challenger R/T SE

This stripped down 1970 Challenger R/T was found sitting in a Virginia backyard collecting leaves, snow and of course RUST.  The VIN breaks down as an N code 335 hp 383 cid Magnum V8 high power engine. It rolled off the Hamtramck, MI assembly plant back in 1970.

Dodge created the R/T as a performance package with 383 Magnum V8, upgraded heavy duty suspension and twin non-functional hood scoops. Also included was a Ralley instrument cluster with a 150 mph speedometer and 8,000 RPM tach. In addition to being an R/T hardtop, this car is also an SE (Special Edition). They only made 3,753 R/T SE hard tops in 1970. The SE luxury package included a vinyl roof, leather seats, overhead console and smaller "formal" rear window. Following the luxury theme whoever ordered the car included factory air conditioning, power steering, and power disc brakes.

This particular car sat in a body shop for several years, probably waiting on payment, and finally made its way to the backyard where it sits now. Several areas will need some attention due to rust damage including the floor pans, firewall, windsheild and back glass, trunk and rear frame sections.

1970 Dodge Challenger

Unfortunately this Challenger may be headed to the great Mopar showroom in the sky. It's really only good for a parts car at this point. So much has been chopped off and hacked away that it's barely holding itself together. Leaving it out in the snow to rust certainly isn't helping matters.

It looks like it might still have a decent front clip, roof, rear body panel and maybe a floor. No word on what engine or transmission this Dodge Challenger came with from the factory. All the drive train has long ago been parted out, hopefully to a good Mopar home.

1970 Dodge Challenger R/T

Here's a numbers matching 383 car with a slap stick automatic transmission. The original Plum Crazy purple exterior paint has been replaced by a wonderfully blah cream color at some point. Or maybe that's just really old and faded primer on a half-assed past restoration attempt.

The "R/T" package (or Road/Track) was the performance version of the Dodge Challenger. It came with heavy duty suspension and a hood with 2 nice looking, but non-functional scoops.

This one came with the base package engine; the 335 hp 383. You could also upgrade to either of two 440 engines or the legendary 426 Hemi. Obviously those are much more valuable now then this 383 car, but it would still be a fun project. The 440 Magnum was a 4 barrel offering 375 hp. The second 440 was the tri-carb Six Pack at 390 hp. Then the fire breathing 426 Hemi at a conservatively rated 425 hp.
