1967 Mustang High Country Special Convertible

Well, you don't see one of these every day! Yes, yes... I know that's a bad cliche, but this is one of those rare instances where it's very true.

The High Country Special was one of the earliest factory limited edition Mustangs. Ford went pretty crazy in 1967 & 1968 with California Specials, Color of the Month Mustangs, Gold Nugget Specials, Lone Star Limited, Ski Country Specials and so on. But the High Country Special actually started with very little fan fare back in 1966, when 333 Mustangs were painted one of three special colors, given a fender badge and sent to Denver, Colorado dealers. The HCS edition continued in 1967 and then again in 1968, although in '68 they were related closer to their sister car, the California Special, rather than the earlier 66 & 67 HCS versions.

The thing that not all Mustang enthusiasts know is the earlier 1966 & 1967 High Country Specials could be any body style with any engine. So while many were coupes, there were a handful of fastback and convertible HCS cars as well in those years.

This rare example needs quite a bit of work, but it will definitely be worth it for the right owner. A car this unique will bring a ton of attention at shows once it's brought back to life. There were 416 HCS cars made in 1967. Some sources state that only 37 of those were convertibles, although I've not seen a Marti report or other evidence of that number. This one was a fairly tame car other than the HCS package. It came with the C code 2 bbl 289 engine and common C4 automatic. Special paint color is Aspen Gold, designated by a 6 digit DSO on the data tag. It did have power steering and a power top, which are really nice features for a driver.

1968 Fastback - Minor Rust

Only one slight problem with this 1968 Mustang fastback... It seems to be RUSTED IN HALF! The owner says it spent it's life in Northern Michigan and that "this happens more than you would think." Yikes!

At least it's not some extremely rare model like a 390 GTA or Shelby or something. This Mustang started life as a simple C-code 289-2 bbl car with a C4 automatic. Pretty run of the mill as Mustangs go, but the fastback body style makes it pretty desireable today. Still, I don't expect this particular car is worth salvaging. Yet another parts car gathers more rust.

UPDATE - MAY, 2010 - What a small world the internet has created. The very same '47 Sedan in this article was sold and the new owner has started bringing it back to life. He was actually searching the internet for parts when he stumbled across this site and found photos of his car! (see comments below)

1947 Ford Deluxe 2-Door Sedan

This is the kind of project you just love to come across hiding behind some old farm house or barn in the midwest. How much of this '47 Ford's 60 years do you think it's spent sitting in the weeds? Long enough to grow them through the interior.

The sheet metal on these old Sedans is amazing. Nothing today compares, and even the thicker steel of the 60's & 70's Muscle Cars doesn't hold up as well as 40's bodies. Sure it's got rust everywhere, but it's almost all surface rust. The structure is still solid after 60 years and ready to be brought back to life as a cool hot rod or even full restoration.

Three 1967-68 Mustang Fastbacks

How would you like to stumble upon this find? Not one, not two, but three classic Mustang fastbacks. Two are 1968's and one is a 1967. Having 3 shells to start with seems like a good deal at first, but as you study these neglected Muscle cars more the appeal starts to wear off. They all need the same things, so the strategy of combining into one nice project doesn't work very well. They all need serious sheet metal work, especially in the rear quarter panels. I'm not sure there's a straight panel between all 3 cars.

Unfortunately we're left to guess at original equipment. No info was given on engines, transmissions or options. But the desirable fastback body style is worth something even as a pure shell. You could make a very cool set of drag racing triplets! Or maybe one restoration, one daily driver and one resto-mod!

"Dad got the car from the original owner in the 90's and been sitting since. We pulled the engine out awhile back and have been soaking it. Found the rear intake gasket blown out and the clutch was down to the rivets. Pulled the pan and the engine is clean as new, hope to unstick it and roll on. Even after sitting all those years there is no rust inside the bores as best I can see."

How sad is this Mustang? They don't get much more abused and neglected then what you see here. This '65 convertible is so pitiful looking it's almost funny. Almost. Here sits this iconic example of the Pony car era and it's been reduced to sharing this scummy backyard with old appliances, broken down lawn mowers, used tires, cinder blocks... and what looks to be a stuffed animal hanging by a noose.

Hmmmm...interesting.

But, back to the car. This thing is just beat. Every body panel has some serious rust or collision damage. It looks like it was painted with water based house paint. And cheap house paint at that. In addition to the rust it looks like it actually has moss growing on it. You know that thing's been sitting there a long time if it's got fungus growing on it! And of course the convertible top disintegrated years ago, which means the interior is absolutely trashed from sitting out in the snow and rain. Floor boards aren't shown in these pics, but I bet you could still your feet right through them to the ground.

Original Mach 1's are getting harder to find, so this Silver Jade specimen really isn't too bad a project once you get past the rust. And there's a lot of that. The surface rust on this Mustang looks horrible, but a trip to the media blaster would probably clean that up pretty well. The structural rust is a bigger concern. It needs floor pans, trunk (floor and drop offs), torque box and rear quarter at a minimum.

Aside from the desirable Mach 1 package, this car also had front disc brakes and power steering. The engine was the fairly common 351-2V with an FMX automatic, although someone replaced the motor mounts to get a 390 or 428 FE big block in there.

This 1970 Boss 302 Mustang has a serious case of body rot. Check out the Fred Flinstone floor pans. But it's a factory original Boss 302 so someone WILL restore it. The serial number ends in a G, verifying it's Boss status.

It rolled off the Dearborn assembly line in 1970 in Medium Blue Metallic paint with black interior. The Boss 302-4V was backed by a 4 speed close ratio manual and 3.50 gears. Other options included rear deck spoiler, sport slats, console, AM radio, deluxe seat belts and a tachometer.

1969 Mustang 351-2v Mach 1

This car could be the twin sister to this other 1969 Mach 1 posted back in Feb. They literally could have rolled off the assembly line one after the other. They're both 351-2V cars, both Mach 1's, both built at the Metuchen, NJ Ford plant, both Silver Jade paint with gold Mach 1 side stripes.... and both sitting in a junk yard stripped out and totally neglected.

You could probably build a fairly solid car if you combined these two shells, except that you'd still need a complete interior, doors, front fenders, engine, tranny, trunk and hood. You know, little stuff like that.

1968 Ford Mustang Coupe - "Fire Sale"

Not only was this '68 coupe wrecked, but the engine caught fire too! It had a decently built up 320, but it's not worth much now except for the block and heads.

I almost think the accident put this car out of it's misery. It was a pretty piss poor attempt at a Shelby clone. Someone should have told the owner you can't just slap GT 500 decals on the side, add a few stripes and be taken seriously at all. You can tell the car was originally a 6 cylinder because of the 4 lug wheels. Which means the owner swapped in a built 302 without giving any thought to the upgrading things like brakes or suspension.

Maybe someone will buy this thing dirt cheap and actually build it the right way. One can only hope.
