1967 Dodge Charger 383

Looks like this Charger has been sitting in the woods for quite a while. You feel damp and humid just looking at the photos. Lots of undergrowth, not much sun, rainy climate, covered in fallen leaves and pine needles - Perfect environment for rust to breed!

This was originally a 383 cid car, but the motor has been replaced with a smaller 318. Transmission is gone and the interior is shot. You can bet all the floors and trunk need to be replaced or at least get major patchwork done.

An original Powerglide Super Sport

Wow! What a cool '63 Impala project car! Not only is it one of the greatest looking of the early Impalas, but it's a factory 409 "Turbo Thrust" car. You know, as in the famous Beach Boys song? And to top it off it has the rare SS (Super Sport) package, factory black vinyl top and a Powerglide automatic transmission.

The big problem is the engine and transmission are gone. That's a big part of this car's rarity and worth. There's rust in this car, but not as much as you might expect. It's been sitting in the desert for three decades, which certainly has helped protect the sheet metal from the worst of it. There are some pinholes and surface rust, but supposedly the areas of full rust through are small, like the lower sections of both front fenders. Really it looks like a very straight Impala that hasn't been messed with too much over the years. It would be great a rare Chevrolet like this restored.

Garaged for 14 years

Dan S. submitted these photos of a nice project Mustang sitting in a garage waiting to be rescued. He didn't give much info, but it's a 1968 Mustang fastback with a factory V8 and automatic transmission. It's a small block from the engine photo, so either a 289 or 302.

Looks like it had some work done to it like new floor pans before it was tucked away in a dusty garage for the last 14 years. Dan says it also features a fold down rear seat and pop open gas cap. .

77,000 original mile Camaro stored for 30+ years

Someone got a deal on this true barn find 1967 Camaro RS. It sold on eBay recently for $9,472. Yes, I know the "barn find" term is used these days for just about any old car that has a layer of dust on it, but this one was honestly pulled out of an Ohio barn. It sat there for 30 plus years and only has 77,000 original miles on the odometer. Supposedly with a quick fluid flush, new starter and fresh battery she started up just fine.

The reason barn finds are so desirable is that they typically haven't been molested and modified. They're like time capsules just waiting for the right enthusiast to polish her up and turn back the hands of time. This one still has it's original (numbers matching) 327 cid small block and Powerglide automatic. The black vinyl top and Emerald Turquoise paint are faded for sure, but still original to the car. The only thing not original is the hood, for whatever reason.

A 1967 Camaro RS barn find. What more could a car guy ask for? Good luck to the new owner!

'68 Big Block Cat Saved!

Thanks to Steve N. for sending in this survival story. Way too often you see that great muscle car sitting in the weeds because the owner says he's going to restore it some day. Usually they sit so long that there's nothing left to save after a few decades of rust. But this big block Cougar has found a new home and is on it's way to being restored and back on the road again.

So what kind of big block has a 2 bbl carb? It's actually a very rare X code 390. Ford made a handful of these as some strange way of marketing the heavy big block FE engine as a fuel efficient choice. Not too many fell for that sales pitch, making the X code very rare today. They came on both Cougars and Mustangs, but only in 1968. The engine itself was identical to the S code 390-4v, but with a 2v carb and intake. This breathing restriction equated to a 45 horsepower hit as compared to the 325 hp 4v version.

This particular Cougar is also an XR-7, which was Mercury's luxury interior package. The XR-7 featured real leather seats, simulated wood grain dash and steering wheel, upper and lower consoles with clock, map lights and deluxe door panels. Steve's new project also has a nice list of options including air conditioning, power brakes and power steering. There was also an almost complete tilt-a-way steering column, but he's not sure it's original to this car. The interior is gutted and most of the XR-7 parts are going to have to be sourced from parts cars or careful NOS searching.

Rare Grabber Special Value Package

This 1970 Sportsroof is a Grabber Special Mustang for sale recently on eBay. Ford introduced this option in February of 1970 to help promote the new set of Grabber paint colors. This particular Mustang is one of only 740 Grabber Green cars made, with only 10 currently in the Grabber Registry. Other colors included Grabber Blue, Grabber Orange, Bright Yellow and Calypso Coral.

The Grabbers were all fastbacks (Sportsroofs) and most had either black or white interiors. They also featured black "C" body tape stripes (think Boss 302), color matched dual sport side mirrors, blackout rear tail light panel, 14" standard "dog dish" hub caps and a Windsor 302-2V engine.

The particular Mustang project car also came with C4 Cruise-O-Matic transmission, F70x14 Belted white sidewall tires, power steering and AM radio. The new owner will need to do quite a bit of work on this fastback to bring it back to life. Rust has completely taken out the floor pans, trunk floor, torque boxes and lower quarters. Paint is original, which is nice. Sure it will need to be repainted, but it's a plus that it doesn't have dozens of layers of paint slathered on it over the years.

1965 Pontiac GTO Coupe

This is THE original muscle car; a 1964 GTO. This was the first year for GM's A body as well as the legendary GTO. This example has a bit of rust, but really appears quite solid. At least it hasn't been sitting in a field for 20 years. It may have been forgotten and neglected, but it doesn't have it's tires in the grave just yet.

It's a factory PHS verified GTO with floor shift. This goat lost it's engine and transmission somewhere along the line, but the rest is still mostly there and intact. With some basic rust repair (quarter panels, floor pans and trunk) this will be a nice restoration project for someone. Now the owner just needs to be convinced that he's never going to restore it and let it go!

1970 'Cuda 340 cid w/ 4 speed

Here we see the results of another great restoration project just sitting and rusting away. This rare factory 4 speed 'Cuda has a ton of potential, but it also needs a ton of work. It's missing most of the front end; fenders, grill, bumpers, front valance, etc.

It's a factory 340 cid 4 barrel Barracuda with heavy duty 4 speed manual transmission. The color is Bright Blue Metallic with medium blue interior. It came from the factory with some nice options including Rallye Instrument Cluster and power brakes.

Rare 400 RAM-AIR Firebird project car

Just looking at the photos you can feel the brutal desert heat that this Arizona Firebird has been baking in for the last decade or two. Although not rusted away (thanks to it's dry climate) this Firebird will need all new floors and trunk at a minimum. Seems as though the doors, front fenders, rear quarter panels and cab support members are still in decent shape.

The engine is still there luckily, but has several bent push rods due to a slipped timing chain. Supposedly the block and heads weren't damaged, but that would be tough to prove until you got the engine out of the car and hot tanked.

It's a documented RAM-AIR car per the Pontiac Historical Society (PHS). The original color was Autumn Gold (interior and exterior) with the hood blackout option and a center blackout stripe on the rear trunk. A very sharp early Firebird with a ton of potential due to it's rare power train.  Hope it went to a good home!

1959 Chevrolet Corvette Uncovered

Barry sends in this 1959 Corvette that's been uncovered after a few decades. He said it was found in a guy's shop after sitting for 28 years. It comes with a fresh 283 matching motor, a 4 speed out of a 1961 Vette and both tops. It would be great to see a classic Corvette like this back on the road.

Edit Monday, February 27, 2012 - This Corvette has now been sold. Good luck to the new owner. Hope to see some progress photos of the restoration.
